The engine house determines the number of engines you can own. By upgrading the engine house you're allowed to acquire more engines. The engine house level determines how many engines you can own. In each era, there is a maximum number of engines you can own.

Tip: The Engine House (EH) is widely considered to be the most important upgrade. It's best for profits and for city growth to increase size of Engine House as soon as possible until the maximum level for the era is reached.
